Gabriele Beger dedicated her entire professional life to libraries. After training as a library assistant, she first completed a part-time degree in librarianship and then a degree in law. She began her career in Berlin, where she worked from 1992 in a managerial position at the Berlin City Library and then at the Berlin Central and Regional Library Foundation. In 2005, she moved to Hamburg, where she managed the State and University Library until 2018. She was also involved in teaching and library associations.

In 2016, Gabriele Beger took over as Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board at ZB MED. She supported our transformation from a library to an information centre with a digital focus with great dedication and invaluable expertise. 

The library community in Germany has lost a highly committed, popular and professionally valued colleague. Our condolences go out to her loved ones.
