Automatically Accessible: ZB MED Enhances Inclusive Access to Scientific Publications with the MAK Collection

The latest issue of The MAK Collection for Occupational Health and Safety marks a milestone with its 75th fully accessible article, optimized for assistive technologies. These articles, published in PDF format, not only meet accessibility and usability standards, but are also produced through an automated process. The journal, focused on workplace health and safety, is published by the DFG and hosted on PUBLISSO, ZB MED's publication platform.

Screen readers rely on structured metadata for interpreting content, ensuring accessibility for individuals with visual impairments. To achieve this, the PUBLISSO team uses the open-source tool Apache Formatting Objects Processor (FOP), which automatically generates "born accessible" PDFs that cater to specific content requirements like headings, links, images, lists, formulas, and tables.

The MAK Collection has been published quarterly in German and English since 2020 in open access. With the release of Issue 3 on September 30, 2024, the 75th accessible article signifies an important step forward in making scientific information more inclusive.
