The Federal Statistical Office publishes the statistics on people with disabilities every two years, most recently in June 2022: At the end of 2021, around 7.8 million people with disabilities lived in Germany, making up 9.4 % of the total population. In April 2022, the employment statistics of persons with disabilities were published by the Federal Employment Agency (with the data status of December 2020): The employment rate was 4.6 % overall. Private employers had an actual rate of 4.1 %, public employers had a rate of 6.4 %.
In order to promote the participation of persons with disabilities in working life, the Social Code IX obliges all private and public employers with more than 20 jobs to fill at least 5 % of their positions with persons who are severely disabled or of equal status. At around 10 %, the inclusion rate at ZB MED is almost twice as high as required by law. It corresponds roughly to the proportion of people with disabilities in the total population in Germany.
