New method simplifies task of finding open access information in search engines - Colaborative project develops new approach to searching for open access information
ZB MED’s online portal LIVIVO has now become the first search engine to incorporate this new service. Anyone interested in life science literature can use LIVIVO to search through more than 11 million open access items from all over the world. The developers have also added a new filter which makes it easier to get more accurate search results. ZB MED has also applied its Knowledge Environment data layer as a reliable and persistent means of curating and enriching existing bibliographic data. This solution allows it to add extra literature resources to LIVIVO such as information on open access availability, for example.
The path is now clear for this new method to be incorporated in other search engines and discovery services. One of the biggest challenges in its development was finding ways to manage the enormous quantities of data in suitable infrastructures. Implementation of this powerful and efficient service through the EZB is another important step forward in the quest to provide unrestricted open access to bulk quantities of scientific information in search engines, with the ultimate aim of strengthening the open access movement in our knowledge-based society.
Background information: Electronic Journals Library at Regensburg University Library
Regensburg University Library established the Electronic Journals Library (EZB in its German abbreviation) back in 1997 and has been expanding and developing it ever since. Currently more than 620 participating organisations use the EZB. It is also used in virtual libraries (subject portals) and other specialist information services. The establishment of the EZB and many of the improvements since then have come about through projects funded by third parties, including funding bodies such as the German Research Foundation and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
