Print and electronic resources from the field of agricultural sciences are a key part of ZB MED’s collection. Its primary focus is on collecting scientific works relevant to the value creation chain that extends from the environment to people, nutrition and health.
Agricultural sciences cover a broad domain, and the range of ZB MED’s holdings in this area is correspondingly wide. It includes the responsible production of healthy food of plant and animal origins, the ability to achieve sustainable crop yields for a growing global population under the pressure of global climate change, and innovative concepts on the use of alternative raw materials and energy from regenerative sources.
The collection policy also extends to scientific works on the efficient use of resources in agricultural production systems, as well as analyses of material and process cycles and their environmental impact with the aim of preserving the natural resources of soil, water, air and landscapes.
A particular focus is placed on current research topics which adopt a multidisciplinary approach that encompasses medicine, agricultural sciences, or environmental sciences. These include studies on biodiversity and the importance of various biodiversity goods for people’s quality of life, as well as research into infectious diseases and zoonoses, particularly in regard to the ever-increasing contact between human and animal habitats.
Certain areas are only given secondary consideration in the active collection, including the history of agricultural sciences as well as general and specialist aspects of politics, sociology and law. ZB MED’s collection policy also gives a more minor role to economic aspects and to specialist works on technical aspects such as agricultural machinery, the construction of livestock sheds, and biotechnological and genetic engineering procedures in industrial production.
