Open access publishing of encyclopedic handbooks

The project combined the novel approach of publishing a “living” encyclopedic handbook with the goal of further developing ZB MED’s PUBLISSO publishing platform and opening it up to other publication formats.

To set an example of best practice, the “Politics and Gender” committee of the German Political Science Association (DVPW) produced an encyclopedic handbook on the topic of politics and gender. This was published on the PUBLISSO publishing platform by the Barbara Budrich publishing company. The handbook is considered as “living” because the individual articles will be successively published under gold open access and can be updated at any time. In addition, the same articles are published at regular intervals in the form of an open access book.

The second key focus of the project was to continue developing and expanding PUBLISSO into a freely available publishing platform for all standard publication types. This platform enables small/mid-sized publishing houses and university presses to publish monographs, journal articles, serial publications, handbooks and encyclopedias on a publishing platform. The individual modules can be adapted to the specific needs of each particular discipline – including academic disciplines outside the life sciences.

ZB MED’s role in the project

ZB MED will head up the collaborative project and continue to develop the PUBLISSO publishing platform. Its responsibilities also include hosting and maintaining the platform.
