Publishing infrastructures for gold open access and green open access
This project aims to expand and stabilise open access publishing infrastructure to keep pace with demand. In 2003, ZB MED set up the German Medical Science (GMS) open access platform for journals and conference proceedings from the field of medicine in collaboration with the German Institute of Medical Documentation and Information (DIMDI) and the German Association of Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF).
The Living Handbooks for life sciences are a recent addition to this platform. Over the next two years, ZB MED will examine the specialist needs of scientists from the humanities, natural sciences and life sciences and make corresponding improvements to all the different formats of publication (conference and congress proceedings, journals, books). New tools are enabling researchers to exploit all the myriad advantages of digital publishing technologies to publish their results in a handy, high-quality open access format that is searchable and accessible from anywhere in the world.
ZB MED’s role in the project

Results
The project has produced a German-language guide to the development of Open Access publication platforms for gold and green OA. It summarises current quality standards that are necessary to obtain certifications such as the DINI certificate or to meet the requirements of the European research funding agencies' Plan S. At the same time, it provides an overview of suitable software solutions and selected examples of best practice from the field of publishing. With this guide, ZB MED offers a useful tool for scientific institutions planning their own Open Access platforms.
