Knowledge Graph Infrastructure for the German National Research Data Infrastructure
Knowledge graphs (KGs) are powerful tools for linking research data across disciplines and enhancing interoperability. They play a crucial role in advancing the mission of Germany’s National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) by making data FAIR ‒ findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable.
While several NFDI consortia are already developing their own knowledge graph solutions, what is currently missing is a central, reusable KG infrastructure. The proposed basic service aims to fill this gap by providing the following core functions:
- A KG registry which will aggregate information on all knowledge graphs contributed by NFDI consortia and the research communities they represent.
- An access service that will facilitate the sharing and use of knowledge graphs across NFDI projects.
- Support for research communities in creating their own decentralised knowledge graphs through the provision of technologies, standards and expert advice.
To refine and optimise these services, a comprehensive needs assessment will be conducted. Additionally, the basic service will compile documentation, provide consulting and support services to streamline KG creation and facilitate the harmonisation of ontologies to establish a standardised database.
This integrated approach will enhance data integration, foster standardised ontological practices and make a significant contribution to advancing the One NFDI vision. At the same time, it will support international collaboration through partnerships with initiatives such as the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC).
