Women have unique health related issues, including pregnancy, menopause and other conditions that differ for females. They also suffer the consequences of violence against women: rape, physical and psychological attacks, and cultural marginalization.

Women and men are not equals when it comes to inclusion in medical research, from basic cell models to human clinical trials. Women have often not been included in numbers necessary to show how they differ from men in order to optimize the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, as well as other diseases.

From lack of empathetic communication between patient and doctors, lack of broader diagnostic or treatment considerations, difficulty of access, and stereotypical assumptions; women have suffered the negative consequences of the hampered process and their impact has affected the rest of the social networks that surround them.

Professionals in the Health Sciences are starting to realize the lapse and attempting to address the gaps to provide a more appropriate delivery of care and healing.
