Call for Presentations: 7th Workshop Retrodigitisation

Topic: Presenting digitised collections - conceptualisation, presentation and mediation

The workshop will take place on 20 and 21 March 2025 at ZB MED in Cologne. It is aimed at practitioners who deal with retro-digitisation in libraries. As in previous years, the workshop will offer a wide range of interesting presentations on the practice of retrodigitisation. We need you and your submissions!

The next workshop will focus on the contemporary presentation of digitised collections. The programme is dedicated in particular to the topics of conceptualisation, presentation and communication of digitised collections and holdings via the institutions' presentation platforms in relation to the use of digitised material. The following aspects will be covered:

Conceptualisation:

  • Software development: advantages and disadvantages of standard solutions vs. in-house developments
  • Existing presentation tools: What is available? What works and what doesn't?
  • Consideration of special requirements, such as dealing with different reading directions, non-European characters and languages and other requirements
  • Utilisation of the presentation of documents via a viewer within and outside the institution (presentation options for non-public domain works)

Presentation:

  • Making holdings and collections known and visible
  • Requirements for the web design
  • Usage requirements and features of the presentation systems

Mediation:

  • Involvement & participation of users: Crowd sourcing, feedback mechanisms, ...
  • Extended analysis and presentation options for digitised material, e.g. word frequency counts, comparative analysis of works
  • Co-operation with other institutions
  • External interfaces such as IIIF, OAI and others
  • Integration into superordinate portals such as DDB, Europeana, subject portals ...

We cordially invite you to submit your topic proposal including title and abstract to Dawn Wehrhahn (TIB) by 18 October 2024. Short 20-minute presentations with practical examples and a subsequent 20-minute discussion are planned. Speakers will be reimbursed up to 250 euros for travelling expenses and free admission to the workshop. The fee for workshop participants is 140 euros.

Your abstract for the presentation should be up to 500 words. Please send us your biographical details (up to 50 words) and let us know whether and under which licence (e.g. CC BY NC licence) we may publish your contribution in Open Access after the workshop.

We will publish the programme at the beginning of next year and then open registration. The Retrodigitisation Workshop is being organised jointly by the three German central specialist libraries TIB - Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology, ZB MED - Information Centre for Life Sciences and ZBW - Leibniz Information Centre for Economics as well as the Berlin State Library - Prussian Cultural Heritage.
