Cooperation between University Bonn and ZB MED bears fruit. Joint appointment of bioinformatics scientist Juliane Fluck by Faculty of Agriculture and Information Centre
In addition to this joint appointment, the cooperation agreement signed by the University of Bonn and ZB MED also includes collaboration in research initiatives and in efforts to encourage and support talented young researchers. The plan is for ZB MED staff to get involved in supervising doctoral theses and to participate in doctoral examination procedures. What’s more, the cooperation partners will be setting up joint groups of promising young talent and establishing joint research projects.“This joint appointment of Professor Fluck is an important step forward in our efforts to strengthen innovative research in life sciences at both institutions,” says Professor Dietrich Rebholz-Schuhmann, Scientific Director of ZB MED. “It is also an excellent way of linking up university and non-university research. We can be confident of seeing synergy effects that will have a positive impact on the development of regional competence networks and the development of young talent.”
Juliane Fluck studied biology and completed her PhD in the field of cell biology and immunology with computer science as her minor. The bioinformatics scientist began work at the Fraunhofer Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing SCAI in 2000, and in 2006 she took charge of the Text Mining group. In April 2017, she was appointed as deputy head of the Bioinformatics department.
Professor Fluck specialises in the fields of text and data mining. Key topics of her research include semantic data integration and the electronic availability and interoperability of data and knowledge. Her responsibilities at Fraunhofer SCAI have included academic and industrial information extraction projects as well as the development of ontologies, terminologies and training corpora. Juliane Fluck is an ardent supporter of public evaluation and standardisation activities. Her research group regularly participates in competitive evaluation processes, and she herself co-organises events in this field.
