High-resolution referencing of statements on gene regulation interactions of bacteria in open access publications using Wikidata
Accurate referencing of sources when presenting and discussing statements is an essential component of good scientific practice. With the rapid increase in the number of open access publications, scientific databases often present data, information and knowledge without referencing the original source, or only citing the scientific publication, but not the exact location within this publication. This makes it difficult or even impossible to verify statements and prevents the efficient examination of collective knowledge.
In this project, ZB MED developed an online tool to provide high-resolution references to sections of open access publications containing statements on interactions in the regulation of gene expression in bacteria. The tool will also serve as a prototype for other projects in which fine-grained resolution of references is both desirable and achievable. This new method is only designed to work with articles published as open access, because only in this case is is possible to resolve the references without legal hindrance and display the referenced sections or complete articles.
Using a data model developed as part of the project, the developers have created a compiled database of gene regulation interactions of bacterial model organisms on the Wikidata site. This collaboratively editable database is run by the Wikimedia community. The new online tool can be used to search and visualise the RNA interactions data stored on Wikidata, as well as displaying the statements on the interactions that are mentioned in the corresponding open access source publication.
