Digital Bioethics Network
Bioethics is currently in a state of flux. The increased use of IT and data-science methods to address ethical issues in healthcare and biomedical research has transformed our understanding of the field, leading to the emergence of what we now call “digital bioethics”. Although still in its infancy, this domain already encompasses varied and heterogeneous areas of research.
The diverse discipline of digital bioethics
While some projects in this area are focused on ethical research considerations, others are more concerned with addressing the needs of clinical practice or advising on policy issues. Equally diverse is the nature of the data used in these projects, which may include analyses of social media or documents and/or the use of published ethical case reviews or electronic patient records.
Challenges and goals of the Digital Bioethics Network
This fast-evolving discipline raises crucial questions about the content and methodologies of bioethics and about its impact on social science and policy. The German-speaking world previously lacked an institutionalised network of researchers in this area. The Digital Bioethics Network aims to fill this gap by exploring and organising promising new areas of research. By helping to establish this new research domain in German-speaking countries, it hopes to boost ties between experts in this field and to promote high-quality research.
